The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
