Football Association of Ireland Passes Motion Seeking European Football Ban on Israel
Ireland's football governing body has given the green light to present a official proposal to Uefa, demanding the exclusion of Israel from all European club and international competitions.
Basis of the Recommended Ban
The resolution, which was put forward by Dublin club Bohemians, cited claimed breaches by the Israel Football Association of two key European football regulations.
- Inability to apply and uphold an effective policy against racism.
- Establishment of clubs in disputed territories without the approval of the Palestinian Football Association.
Ballot Results and Next Steps
As stated in an announcement from the Irish FA, the proposal was supported by 74 votes, with 7 against and two abstentions.
They plans to officially present this request to the UEFA's decision-making body, asking for the immediate suspension of the IFA from Uefa competitions.
In an extraordinary general meeting of the FAI, an standard motion was put to delegates. It passed by a large margin.
Earlier European Deliberations
Uefa had previously paused plans to exclude Israeli football at the end of September, following the revealing of a US peace proposal for the area.
Although they never officially confirmed contemplating an extraordinary meeting on the matter, plans were understood to be quite advanced.
International Backdrop
This Irish resolution follows similar demands in September from the leaders of both Turkey and Norway's governing bodies for banning Israel from global football.
These appeals were issued after United Nations experts asked world and European football bodies to ban the Israeli FA, citing a UN commission of inquiry report that claimed Israel of committing genocide during the war in Gaza.
The Israeli government has denied these allegations and described the findings as outrageous.
Possible Ramifications
If Uefa decide to suspend the IFA, it would likely strain relations with the US administration – joint hosts for the upcoming World Cup – which strongly opposes such an action.
Although the European body has the power to suspend Israeli teams from European competitions, it might not be able to prevent them from competing in qualification for the World Cup, which falls under Fifa.
