UN Removes Sanctions on President of Syria Ahead of White House Visit

United Nations Security Council members gave the green light to a US resolution removing restrictions on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria ahead of his White House visit next week.

He was appointed transitional president following his leadership in a rebel offensive that ousted the former president in the final month of 2024, bringing to a close 13 years of civil war.

America's diplomat UN ambassador Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "a strong political signal" that recognised Syria was in "a fresh chapter" after Assad's removal.

Sharaa was under UN sanctions while commanding the Muslim faction HTS, which was formerly linked to al-Qaeda. The US removed the group from its registry of foreign terror groups during July.

Additional Sanctions Relief

The UN also removed penalties against the Syrian interior official the interior minister.

Syria's foreign minister applauded the lifting of the penalties, declaring through digital channels: "The nation shows its gratitude toward America and allied countries for their support of Syria and its people."

Forthcoming Presidential Visit

The Syrian leader's Washington trip at the start of the week follows American leader Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa achieved "significant advancement" in establishing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.

Subsequent to their talks, Trump remarked the Syrian leader had "a real shot for national reconciliation".

Both presidents held discussions on their first occasion this past May, when Trump visited Riyadh during a visit to the Middle East.

After that meeting, Trump portrayed the Syrian as a "strong individual" having a "formative history".

His former militant faction was al-Qaeda's affiliate inside the country before he cut connections back in 2016.

Previous US Visit

This week's diplomatic engagement will not be the president's debut journey to America in the current year. In September, he became the first Syrian leader to present to the United Nations gathering in Manhattan for nearly six decades.

In his speech, he stated the country had been "reclaiming its rightful place within the global community" and demonstrated unity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
